Overview
Viddler allows you to add a custom domain to your video embed codes to make it appear as if the videos were hosted on your site.
Topics
Requirements
In order to set up the custom domain for embed codes, you will need access to your domain’s DNS management. If you do not, contact the administrator of your domain—or after that—your domain registrar for more information
Limitations
While a great solution in most cases, there are some limitations to this feature:
- Custom Embed Domains do not support SSL!
- If the user looks hard enough, they may still see requests from viddler.com in their browser status bar
- This method does not work around content-blocking filters that some educational institutions and business use
- The "Get embed code" links inside the player will still return embed codes with "viddler.com" in them. You'll need to generate the embed using code on your site instead.
- If you are using our iframe embed code, Contact us to complete setup (There are extra steps required to enable proper support for the iframe embed code.)
DNS Changes
To set things up, you’ll have to log in to your DNS management/registrar and add a CNAME (Canonical Name) Record to point a subdomain (videos.example.com for example) to “viddler.com” (without quotes; also note that you should not enter “http://” or “https://” for this entry.
Tip: If you are having trouble finding the DNS management for your domain, look for terms like “Advanced DNS”, “Custom DNS”, “DNS Management”, “Host Management”, or similar.
Note: It could take some time for the change to propagate. The easiest way to test to see if it works is to type in the address of your CNAME (in this example “videos.example.com”) and see if it loads viddler.com.
Viddler Account Changes
After your DNS settings have been changed and is redirecting to viddler.com, you’ll need to make the final changes to your Viddler account. The “Embed URL” setting can be found at the Player Settings page.
Important: In order for the custom URL to work, you will need to enter the full URL to the player. (In this example, the field will need to read “http://videos.example.com/player/{key}”.)
Also Important: If you are using the iframe embed code type, please contact support in order to complete setup of this feature.
